Jeff Baker / vocals, High School and College Vocal Jazz Ensembles
Called “...one of the best male vocalists in the jazz world today,” by WCLK in Atlanta, Jeff Baker has quickly become one of the most significant talents in the next generation of jazz vocalists. His diverse musical recordings, exciting live performances, and infectious energy and personality have gained him accolades from critics and listeners alike. Baker has headlined numerous festivals and clubs, and has shared the billing and played with some of jazz music’s top artists including the Yellow Jackets, Mose Allison, Kenny Werner, Joey DeFrancesco, Joe LaBarbera, Bruce Barth, Darrell Grant, Karrin Allyson, Nancy King, Henry Butler, Dave Frishberg, Gene Harris, Orrin Evans, Clark Sommers, George Colligan, Randy Porter and many more.
Jeff has performed throughout the U.S., and has enjoyed performance engagements in central Europe and South Africa. His four critically acclaimed CD releases on the Origin/OA2 Records imprint have charted on the ‘Jazzweek’ International Radio Top 50, have been played on over 200 stations internationally, were Top 5 on NPR’s nationally syndicated “Jazz Works” radio program, and were #1 on stations in Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, Portland, Buffalo, St. Louis, Cape Town, South Africa; and New Zealand.
A graduate of Willamette University, Baker has also been sought after as a jazz educator, adjudicating numerous festivals, and working in clinics with some of the nations very best high school and college jazz programs. As one of the "founding fathers" of the ArtsWest School for Performing and Visual Arts, Baker helped create one of the top High-School Jazz programs in the country. His students have won over 100 Top Awards at festivals and competitions throughout the U.S., including being named finalists to the Monterey Jazz Festival's Next Generation Jazz Festival in 2010-2012 and winning eight Downbeat Magazine Student Music Awards in the past three years, including the 2010 and 2012 High School Vocal Solo Winners, and the 2012 Winner for Large Vocal Jazz Ensemble. Additionally, Baker’s groups have been invited to perform at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Carnegie Hall, and the National Cathedral.
Jeff is an ACDA (American Choral Directors Association) Certified Clinician/Adjudicator, a past member of the International Association of Jazz Education (IAJE), and a current member of the Jazz Education Network (JEN), the National Association for Music Education (NAFME), and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS or the GRAMMY Foundation). Jeff Baker now resides in Portland, OR and is currently on the jazz faculty at Portland State University.
Edmar Colón Quartet, from Berklee College of Music / Clinicians
Featuring four of the pioneering music college’s finest young players, the Edmar Colón Quartet is led by Berklee Presidential Scholar Edmar Colón, a supple and fiery new voice on the tenor saxophone. The group will perform a mix of their own compositions as well as their takes on some well-known standards, all with a hint of Colon’s native Puerto Rico. The Quartet features Edmar Colón (tenor saxophone); Grant Richards (piano); Tabari Lake (bass); and Diego Ramirez (drums).
Berklee College of Music Presidential Scholar Edmar Colón Gierbolini is a 20-year-old tenor saxophonist from Coamo, Puerto Rico. Since beginning his studies at Berklee, Edmar has been chosen for the prestigious Berklee Global Jazz Institute with Artistic Director Danilo Perez. He has had the opportunity to perform with artists such as Joe Lovano, John Patittucci, Danilo Pérez, Miguel Zenón, Dave Liebman, George Garzone, Lionel Loueke, salsa stars Luis Enrique and Ismael Miranda, Ivan Lins, and Steve Cardenas, among others.
Born in Portland, Oregon, Grant Richards began playing piano and composing at age eight and by the time he entered college, he had won four Downbeat Magazine awards and recorded his first album as a leader. In 2009, Grant enrolled in Berklee College of Music after winning the Jimmy Lyons Scholarship, a full-tuition award given each year in collaboration with Monterey Jazz Festival, and presented to one music student from the western United States in recognition of their outstanding talent. In his short career, Grant has performed with many renowned artists, including Esperanza Spalding, Chuck Israels, Ben Wolfe, Damian Erskine, Javon Jackson, Glen Moore, Greg Hopkins, John Lockwood, and Filo Machado.
Bassist Tabari Lake was born in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Beginning his musical exploration in the second grade, on the steel drums, Tabari learned through the public school system to play clarinet, tuba, and electric bass. As he began to focus his attention on the bass, Tabari attended the Interlochen Arts Camp during the summers of 2010 and 2011 where he studied with Bill Sears, Kelly Sill, and was introduced to the double bass by the virtuoso Rodney Whitaker. Tabari received a scholarship to Interlochen to further his classical and jazz studies at the academy; he graduated in 2012. Tabari is a current student at Berklee College of Music, where he is a full-tuition, Presidential Scholar.
Diego Joaquin Ramirez was born in Cork, Ireland, and began playing drums at the age of three. Growing up, he performed with his father’s Latin jazz bands and quickly became noticed as one of Ireland’s top working musicians. In 2009 Diego began his studies as a scholarship student at Berklee College of Music; in 2012 he earned a bachelor’s degree in Professional Music. He has performed with musicians such as Vijay Iyer, Ralph Peterson Jr, Tia Fuller, Oscar Stagnaro, and Niwel Tsumbu.
Ray Drummond / bass, High School Combos, Open Combos
Composer, arranger, bandleader, educator and producer Ray Drummond began playing the trumpet and French horn at age eight, and switched to bass at age fourteen. Drummond received a B.A. in Political Science, and attended the Stanford Graduate School of Business in Palo Alto. While in the Bay Area, he began to work with Bobby Hutcherson, Michael White, Martha Young, Ed Kelly, Tom Harrell, and Eddie Marshall. In 1977, Ray moved to New York City where he quickly became a first call bassist with artists that have included Betty Carter, the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, Wynton Marsalis, Woody Shaw, Hank Jones, Jon Faddis, Milt Jackson, Johnny Griffin, Kenny Barron, Pharoah Sanders, and George Coleman. He has been documented on over 300 recordings with artists including Art Farmer, David Murray, Houston Person, Stan Getz, Kenny Burrell, Kevin Mahogany, Toots Thielemans, Benny Golson, and Ray Bryant. In addition to working with jazz legends, Drummond also records and performs live with a diverse number of emerging artists including Joe Locke, Steve Wilson, Paul Bollenback, Jessica Williams, Rob Schneiderman and Jeanie Bryson.
Drummond has led his own groups for the past 30 years, recording eight recordings under his own name, and three additional ones as a co-leader. His three main groups are “Excursion” with David Sanchez, Craig Handy, Stephen Scott, Mor Thiam and Billy Hart; “The Quartet” with Billy Hart, Stephen Scott and Craig Handy; and "One To One" with Bill Mays. Additionally, he co-leads “The Drummonds,” featuring Billy Drummond and Renee Rosnes. In 1998, Drummond was awarded the New Jersey State Council on the Arts Individual Artist Fellowship, and was a resident artist at the Monterey Jazz Festival, writing a commissioned piece for his "Excursion" band. He has also written additional commissioned pieces for Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania in 2001.
Drummond's teaching credits begin in 1975 as a faculty member of Monterey Peninsula College Music Department in Monterey, California. He continues to conduct master classes, seminars and workshops all over the world including the Stanford Jazz Workshop, the Berklee School of Music, Purdue University, University of Nebraska at Lincoln, the University of Massachusetts, and the Sibelius Academy of Music in Helsinki, Finland. He was also an adjudicator for high school jazz bands as a staff member of the Monterey Jazz Festival from 1975-79.
As a sideman, he continues to work as member of the Kenny Barron Trio, Houston Person, Bobby Hutcherson, George Coleman, Phil Woods, Peter Leitch, David Murray's Power Quartet, Toots Thielemans, the Bill Charlap Trio, The Drummonds, Bennie Wallace, and many others. Dave Eshelman / Gerald Wilson Award
For over three decades, Dave Eshelman has been active as a trombonist, composer, arranger, big band leader, recording artist, and jazz educator. Dave resides in the San Francisco Bay Area and founded the Jazz Garden Big Band as a vehicle for his music. The band has several CD projects which showcase his arrangements and compositions.
His music has been performed by the bands of Joe Henderson, Don Ellis,Bill Watrous, Stan Kenton, the Swedish Radio Orchestra, the Airmen of Note, and hundreds of school bands around the world. Dave has performed as featured soloist with Joe Henderson, Tito Puente, Gerald Wilson, Ray Brown, and the Full Faith and Credit Big Band. He is the Director of Jazz Studies at California State University, Hayward. Dave publishes his works with Walrus Music and Neil A. Kjos Music Company.
Joel Frahm / tenor saxophone, Open Combos,
College Big Bands
Joel Frahm's 2007 release, We Used to Dance (Anzic Records), placed him in the company of master musicians Kenny Barron (piano), Rufus Reid (bass), and Victor Lewis (drums). Frahm more than holds his own in showing both the chops and lyricism that made him an irreplaceable part of many sessions in his two decades on the jazz scene.
Having made a name for himself through his associations with singer Jane Monheit and boyhood friend, pianist Brad Mehldau, Frahm hones his own voice on this breakout recording. Joel has also worked with a vast array of musical peers and jazz legends including Maynard Ferguson, Betty Carter, Matt Wilson, Larry Goldings, Dewey Redman, Lee Konitz, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Andrew Hill, Ben Allison, Pat Martino, Ingrid Jensen, Dena Derose, The Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Kyle Eastwood, and many others.
Born in 1969 in Racine, Wisconsin, Frahm attended the Mason Gross School for the Arts and earned his B.A. in Jazz Performance at Manhattan School of Music. He released three highly regarded CDs on the Palmetto label: The Navigator, Don't Explain (with Mehldau), and Sorry No Decaf. Don’t Explain hit #1 on the jazz radio charts in the United States for two consecutive weeks in 2004; it also reached #1 on CMJ’s college radio charts. Joel was also recently selected in DownBeat Magazine’s Critics Poll as a Rising Star in the tenor saxophone category.
Mike Galisatus / trumpet, Open Combos, Middle School
Trumpeter Mike Galisatus is the Director of Bands at the College of San Mateo and has been the recipient of various teaching honors including the Peninsula Arts Council Arts Educator of the Year (2007), the Otter Distributors 2004 Jazz Educator Award for the State of California, and the Gil Freitas Memorial Award for music education.
He is in-demand as an adjudicator and guest conductor throughout California, and currently holds the office of President of the Bay Section of the California Association for Music Education. As a freelance trumpeter in the San Francisco Bay Area, Michael has recorded with Pete Escovedo and Queen Ida, and has performed with a variety of artists, including Frankie Valli, Kenny Loggins, Gladys Knight, Natalie Cole, Louis Bellson, Johnny Mathis, Mel Torme, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Heat Wave, The O’Jays, and a host of others.

Trombonist Dave Gregoric has recorded with Pete Escovedo, Andy Narrel, Buddy Montgomery, Cab Calloway, Della Reese, Smith Dobson, Ray Brown, Dave Eshelman, the Zasu Pitts Memorial Orchestra, and has performed with The Temptations, Dave Pell, Med Flory, Big Lou and the Polka Princess, Jimmy Heath, Confunktion, Bobby Watson, Cyndi Lauper, Gerri Allen, Sheila E., Guy Lomardo, Modesto Briseno, Michael W. Smith, Louis Bellson, Steve Turre, Twyla Paris, Frankie Valle, The Drifters, Sapo, Vic Demone, Jamie Davis, Jamie Davis, Ron Konali, Martha and the Vandelas, Dick Bright’s SRO, Little Anthony, Princess-Royal Norwegian-Western cruise lines, Circus Vargas, and the Bentley Brothers Circus. Dave has taught all levels of music at Valley Christian Schools in San Jose, California.
His groups have received command performances at many jazz competitions, including Reno, Monterey’s Next Generation, Folsom, San Jose, and Campana jazz festivals. Mr. Gregoric studied at Cal State Long Beach, the L.A. jazz workshop and graduated from William Jessup University with a B.S in Theology with a minor in Jazz Performance.
He has also taught at the Stanford Jazz Workshop, Monterey Jazz Festival Summer Camp, Jazz Camp West, Graded Jazz festival (Brazil), Lafayette Summer Music Jazz Workshop, Donner Mine Jazz Camp, Osaka Jazz festival (Japan), and the San Jose Jazz Society. He has adjudicated at the Santa Cruz Jazz Festival, CMEA (Central Coast and Bay section) jazz Festivals, Folsom Jazz Festival, ACSI Music Festival, Cuesta College Jazz Festival, Cal State Hayward Jazz Festival and is a member of MENC and CMEA, and is a past member of IAJE.
Jeff Hamilton / drums, High School and College Big Bands
Born in Richmond, Indiana, drummer Jeff Hamilton grew up listening to his parent's big band records and at the age of eight, began playing drums along with Oscar Peterson records. He attended Indiana University and later studied with John Avon Ohlen. Influenced by Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Mel Lewis, "Philly" Joe Jones and Shelly Manne, he got his first big break playing with the New Tommy Dorsey Orchestra in 1974. He then joined Lionel Hampton's band until 1975 when he, along with bassist John Clayton, became members of the Monty Alexander Trio. He attained a childhood goal in 1977 when he joined Woody Herman and the Thundering Herd, with whom he made several recordings. In 1978, he was offered the position vacated by Shelly Manne in the L.A.4 with Ray Brown, Bud Shank and Laurindo Almeida. He recorded six records with the L.A.4, some of which featured his own arrangements and compositions. From 1983-1987, Jeff performed with Ella Fitzgerald, the Count Basie Orchestra, Rosemary Clooney and Monty Alexander. Jeff began his association with the Ray Brown Trio in 1988 and left in March 1995 to concentrate on his own trio.
In 1985, Jeff joined bassist John Clayton and saxophonist Jeff Clayton to form the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. Together with an all-star lineup of Los Angeles-based musicians, the big band received an enthusiastic response from reviewers and fans. The Orchestra’s first recording, Groove Shop (Capri), was named by CD Review as one of the best recordings of 1990, and earned a Grammy Award nomination. Jeff received rave reviews for his dynamic drumming on Heart and Soul (Capri). Other releases include Absolutely! (1993, Lake Street Records) and Explosive! featuring Milt Jackson (1998, Qwest) and Shout Me Out (2000, Fable/Lightyear). From 1999-2001, the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra was named the in-residence ensemble for the Hollywood Bowl Jazz series. The Los Angeles Jazz Society named Jeff and his musical partner, John Clayton, musicians of the year for 2006. Jeff is currently touring with his own Trio, the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra and Diana Krall.
In addition to his many recordings with Ray Brown, Jeff has been on nearly 200 recordings with artists such as Natalie Cole, Diana Krall, Milt Jackson, Rosemary Clooney, Barbara Streisand, Mel Torme, John Pizzarelli, Benny Carter, Lalo Schifrin, George Shearing, Dr. John, Clark Terry, Gene Harris, Toshiko Akioshi, Scott Hamilton, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Keely Smith, Bill Holman, Herb Ellis, Barney Kessel and Mark Murphy. Jeff is a frequent guest of the WDR Big Band in Cologne, Germany. He also appeared in Natalie Cole's Great Performances PBS special, Unforgettable and an Oscar Peterson documentary, Life in the Key of Oscar. As well as recording and performing throughout the world, Jeff is also a teacher, arranger and composer. His recording It's Hamilton Time (Lake Street Records) reached #5 on the Gavin national jazz radio chart. The trio's second release, Jeff Hamilton Trio - LIVE! (MONS) was nominated for best jazz recording in Germany in 1997. He had additionally released Hands On and Hamilton House - Live at Steamers, both on the MONS label.
Antonio Hart / alto saxophone, High School Big Bands, College Big Bands
GRAMMY-nominated alto saxophonist Antonio Hart was born in 1968 in Baltimore, Maryland. Hart decided when he was young that he wanted to play alto sax, and after the music programs were cut at his at his high school, a friend got him an audition at the Baltimore School of Arts. At first only classically-trained, Hart became interested in jazz right before college, when he was accepted to the Berklee College of Music. While in Boston, he studied with Bill Pierce, Andy McGhee, and Joe Viola. He made many friends at Berklee, but the most important was Roy Hargrove. Upon graduation, Antonio promptly teamed up with classmate Roy Hargrove to tour and record for three years. Hart also earned a Masters degree in music composition and performance from Queens College, studying with the likes of Jimmy Heath and Donald Byrd.
In 1991, Antonio made his debut on the RCA/Novus label, with For the First Time. Hart made three other albums for RCA/Novus, including 1992’s Don't You Know I Care (a tribute to Dizzy Gillespie); For Cannonball and Woody (1993); and It's All Good (1994). He switched to Impulse! Records for 1997's Here I Stand, earning Hart a GRAMMY nomination for 'Best Jazz Instrumental Solo.' Antonio has appeared as a guest on over 80 recordings, including records with Slide Hampton, Nat Adderley, McCoy Tyner, Monty Alexander, Robin Eubanks, Benny Green, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Nancy Wilson, Gerald Wilson, and Dave Holland. He has recorded seven CDs as a leader, including 2004’s All We Need on Downtown/Chiaroscuro Records. Hart balances his time as a full-time Professor at the Aaron Copland School of Music at the City University of New York’s Queens College, as well as traveling on the road with his band, the Dave Holland Big Band, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band, and more. Jeff Jarvis / trumpet, High School and Conglomerate
Jeff Jarvis has distinguished himself as a trumpeter, composer, jazz educator, and music publisher. He serves as Director of Jazz Studies at California State University Long Beach and frequently appears as a honors jazz band conductor, clinician and lecturer. Jeff is the Music Director Emeritus of the Central New York Jazz Orchestra, and is a former Vice–President of the International Association for Jazz Education. Jeff is part-owner of Kendor Music, Inc., the first educational music publisher to provide jazz charts written especially for students.
His solo recordings as a jazz trumpeter and composer have placed high on national air play charts and have won him critical acclaim. Jeff's early career as a studio trumpeter encompasses over 100 albums for such names as Lou Rawls, Melba Moore, the O'Jays and many more. Live performance credits include Dizzy Gillespie, Louie Bellson, Joe Williams, Benny Golson, Jon Hendricks, Jimmy Heath, Joe Lovano, Henry Mancini, Slide Hampton, Kevin Mahogany, Grady Tate, Eddie Daniels, Rob McConnell, and Doc Severinsen. Jeff is frequently commissioned to compose music for school, military and professional musical groups, along with serving as a contributing editor for The Instrumentalist, and writing for other music trade journals such as Flute Talk, Band & Orchestra Product News, and Jazz Educators Journal. Jarvis has co–authored The Jazz Educators Handbook with Doug Beach, a jazz piano book with Matt Harris entitled The Chord Voicing Handbook, and with Mike Carubia, Effective Etudes For Jazz, the new standard in jazz performance/audition solos.
A Yamaha trumpet artist, Jeff has performed throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and Indonesia. He has most recently been featured with the U.S.A.F. Dave Loeb / piano, Open Combos, Conglomerate Bands
David Loeb, Director of Jazz Studies and Associate Professor of Music at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, conducts jazz ensembles and is instructor of jazz piano and jazz composition. As a jazz pianist, David performed with renowned jazz artists including Freddie Hubbard, Tom Scott, Bobby Shew, Bill Watrous, Tom Harrell, Nancy Wilson, Joe Williams and Anita O' Day. He is also a successful studio keyboardist and has played for many television shows, including the Emmy Awards, Hill Street Blues, Quantum Leap, and Family Guy; and for feature films, including The Birdcage and Pocahontas. He has orchestrated for George Benson and Doc Severinsen and has arranged music for the Academy Awards and American Music Awards. David has also composed music for notable PBS documentaries and for Dolly Parton’s Rainbow. He has additionally performed as principal keyboardist with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and has accompanied Andrea Bocelli, Garth Brooks, Celine Dion, Bette Midler, Quincy Jones, Jewel, Herbie Hancock, Placido Domingo, David Foster, Diana Ross, and Jessye Norman. He was guest conductor with the Philadelphia Orchestra for Dee Dee Bridgewater and the National Symphony Orchestra as Musical Director for Ben Vereen. Under David’s direction UNLV Jazz Studies has received numerous distinguished honors and achieved national recognition. He was a jazz clinician at the University of Idaho’s Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival and at the International Association of Jazz Educators Conference in New York City; served as an adjudicator at Monterey’s Next Generation Jazz Festival, and was an invited guest jazz performer at the Midwest Band Conference in Chicago. David holds a Master of Music Degree in Jazz and Contemporary Media from the Eastman School of Music and a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from West Chester University in Pennsylvania.
Russell Malone / guitar, High School Combos,
Born in Albany, Georgia, guitarist Russell Malone grew up playing a variety of music. Eventually, he made jazz his main focus, but he never lost his appreciation of other styles. Malone was 25 in 1988 when he was hired as a sideman by the seminal organist Jimmy Smith. He went on to back the popular pianist and vocalist, Harry Connick, Jr. from 1990-1994. Malone first recorded as a leader in 1992, when he debuted his self-titled album for Columbia, Russell Malone, which quickly went to #1 on the radio charts and was followed by Black Butterfly in 1993, and Wholly Cats for Japan’s Venus label in 1995.
Malone joined pianist and vocalist Diana Krall in 1995, contributing to Krall's first three GRAMMY-nominated albums. In addition to winning for Jazz Vocal Performance, When I Look In Your Eyes (1999) was the first jazz album since 1976 (George Benson’s Breezin') nominated for Album of The Year. Diana Krall's label, Verve Records, came calling next and released three albums by Malone: Sweet Georgia Peach for Impulse! in 1998, and Look Who’s Here for Verve in 1999, and Heartstrings, also for Verve in 2001. Malone has had the honor of launching the “Strings Series” for the MAXJAZZ label with his 2004 label debut Playground, which was followed by 2006’s Live At Jazz Standard, Volume One, and 2007’s Live At Jazz Standard, Volume Two. Kerry Marsh / High School and College Vocal Jazz Ensembles
Kerry Marsh is a composer and arranger specializing in contemporary music for vocal jazz ensembles. In high demand as a commissioned arranger for many of the nation's top educational vocal and instrumental jazz ensembles, Marsh has a large and varied catalog of music performed regularly around the world. Kerry has published arrangements through UNC Jazz Press and Sound Music Publications.
Along with his wife and musical collaborator Julia Dollison, Kerry released his highly ambitious debut album, Vertical Voices: The Music of Maria Schneider, in March 2010 through ArtistShare. Met with great critical praise, it earned a four-star review in DownBeat Magazine. Dollison and Marsh perform regularly with the vocal quartet Vertical Voices LIVE, with Greg Jasperse and Jennifer Barnes. Vertical Voices LIVE performs the music of Schneider as well as Pat Metheny, Nando Lauria and more, including original compositions by the group.
Since 2003, Kerry has directed the vocal jazz ensembles at Sacramento State, and in that time, his ensembles and individual students have earned eleven DownBeat Magazine Student Music Awards, distinguishing it as one of the premiere programs in the country. The Sac State vocal jazz ensembles were invited twice to perform at conferences of the International Association for Jazz Education, and were one of fourteen winners of a national search to have a song appear on the Epic Records release: Ben Folds - College A Cappella. Marsh has since worked with Folds as a vocal arranger and background singers director in numerous performances with major symphony orchestras, including the Boston Pops and the Washington National Symphony.
Kerry proudly serves on the faculty of the JazzSchool Institute in Berkeley, CA, where he directs vocal jazz ensembles. Marsh is busy year-round as an adjudicator and clinician for jazz festivals and workshops and he serves as a traveling clinician and high school honor vocal jazz ensemble director for the Monterey Jazz Festival. Marsh has directed all-state jazz choirs in California, Arizona, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Wyoming and Illinois and New York and will direct the Maine and New Hampshire All State Jazz Choirs as well as the Nassau County (NY) Honor Jazz Choir in 2012. Kerry graduated in 2000 from the University of Kansas with a B.M.E. in Music Education and in 2003 with a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of North Texas. Marsh's university training included study with Paris Rutherford, Dan Gailey, Simon Carrington, and Rosana Eckert.
Patrice Rushen / piano, Clinician
The multiple GRAMMY®-nominated composer, producer and international recording artist, Patrice Rushen, has amassed an impressive list of groundbreaking achievements--the first woman to serve as Musical Director the Annual GRAMMY Awards, EMMY Awards; NAACP Image Awards, the People’s Choice Awards; HBO’s Comic Relief, and for The Midnight Hour. In addition, Rushen was named as Musical Director/Composer for Newsweek’s first American Achievement Awards; served as Musical Director for Janet Jackson’s 1993-1995 World Tour; as well as acting as Music Director and host of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s A Tribute to Ella.
Rushen’s 1998 CD, Signature, received a GRAMMY nomination as well as a NAACP Image Award nomination, and landed in the Top 10 on the Adult Contemporary jazz charts. As a classically trained pianist, the critically lauded, chart-topping style she championed in the 70s and 80s—a jazz/R&B/pop fusion that combines melodic accessibility with instrumental prowess—not only became her signature style, but has continued to be a mainstay of popular radio. Many performers have scored their own hits using samples from Patrice’s songs -- most notably Will Smith’s 1997 smash hit, “Men in Black.” Sampled from her 1982 GRAMMY-nominated recording, “Forget Me Nots,” the song was honored by ASCAP as 1997’s Most Performed Song From a Motion Picture. George Michael’s "Fast Love" also sampled "Forget Me Nots" and featured Rushen’s original vocal tracks. In 2007, Kirk Franklin’s had a hit with “Looking For You,” a version of her own hit song, “Haven’t You Heard,” for which Rushen won the 2007 ASCAP Top Gospel Song songwriter’s award.
Rushen is also an accomplished composer providing musical scores for movies and TV, including Showtime's The Killing Yard; Just A Dream, the Sundance Film Award-winning Our America; Fire and Ice for BET; HBO's America's Dream; Ruby Bridges for Disney; Masterpiece Theater's Cora Unashamed; Brewster Place; the PBS documentary A. Phillip Randolph; and Lifetime’s For One Night. Rushen also composed the theme song for The Steve Harvey Show. Rushen's feature film composing credits include Men In Black, Waiting To Exhale, Without You I'm Nothing, and Hollywood Shuffle.
As a producer, Rushen helmed Sheena Easton's “The Nearness of You" for the hit film Indecent Proposal and produced Easton’s album of jazz standards for MCA, 1993’s No Strings.
Considered one of the world's top jazz pianists, Rushen has performed with and produced for such esteemed artists as Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Prince, Lionel Hampton, Carlos Santana, Boys II Men, George Benson, Jean-Luc Ponty, Tom Jones, Nancy Wilson, Michael Jackson, Dianne Reeves, Sheena Easton, Stanley Turrentine, Joshua Redman, and many more.
She has played at some of the world's most prestigious jazz festivals, and has performed with classical orchestras. She has served as Composer-In-Residence with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for the 2000 and 2001 concert seasons, and has composed several symphonic works since 2000--each a commissioned assignment by a major orchestra, with the World Premieres receiving rave reviews. Rushen was also named Composer-In-Residence during the August 2004 sessions at the Henry Mancini Institute.
As a member of the Alain Locke High School combo, Rushen won the Monterey’s 1972 High School Competition. Her performance at that year’s Monterey Jazz Festival with Locke, and also with the California High School All-Star Band (now the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra) gained Rushen national attention and earned her a recording contract with Prestige Records. She has 14 solo albums to her credit and a Greatest Hits anthology released on Rhino Records in 1997. She has also recorded two albums with The Meeting, which includes Rushen, Ndugu Chancler, and Ernie Watts.
Rushen received an Honorary Doctorate of Music degree in 2005 from Berklee College of Music for her “outstanding contribution to music and culture” and was honored by Jazz at Lincoln Center in 2006 at the 2nd Annual Diet Coke Women In Jazz Festival. In 2008, Rushen accepted a professorship at Berklee. Rushen spends whatever free time she has working closely with the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, NARAS’ GRAMMY in the Schools program, and other organizations dedicated to establishing music education and mentorship programs for inner-city youth.
Bobby Shew / trumpet, High School Combos,
College Big Bands
Trumpeter Bobby Shew was born Albuquerque, New Mexico. He started guitar at age eight but switched to trumpet at age 10. At age 12, asked to play in a local dance band for weddings and dance gigs. Bobby spent his summers after high school in New York City listening to the great jazz masters. As an attendee of the first two years of the Stan Kenton Summer Jazz Clinics in Bloomington, Indiana, he studied under Don Jacoby, Conte Candoli, Johnny Richards, John LaPorta, Shelly Manne, and many more.
Bobby attended University of New Mexico for two years, studying Architecture and Commercial Art. Drafted into US Army, he was assigned as a jazz soloist to NORAD Band in Colorado Springs. After service, moved to New York City and joined the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, rooming and playing with legendary Charlie Shavers.
After Dorsey, he worked with the big bands of Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson, Si Zentner, and Benny Goodman. He settled in Las Vegas for seven years, playing in top show bands in casinos, and in 1972, he moved to Los Angeles and became a first-call studio musician. He continued to play in the big bands of Bill Holman, Bob Florence, Louie Bellson, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Ed Shaughnessy, Bill Berry, and Nat Pierce-Frank Capp Juggernaut.
Bobby is also the designer and developer of SHEW model Yamaha 6310Z and 8310Z trumpets; 6310Z & 8310Z flugelhorns and the “Soloist” mute; Yamaha SHEW series trumpet and flugelhorn mouthpieces; as well as SHEW series mouthpieces for the Marcinkiewicz Company and for Kelly Mouthpieces (Lexan mouthpieces).
As an author, Bobby has published Etudes and Exercises for Jazz and Classical Player and Basic Study for Trumpet. He is the former Chairman for IAJE and International Trumpet Guild; a former Associate Professor of Trumpet at USC in Los Angeles (10 years); Cal State Northridge (18 years); and California Institute of the Arts (3 years).
Bobby has held numerous Artist-in-Residences worldwide including Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Japan, Canada, and Austria. He has been elected into New Mexico Music Hall of Fame, and is a multiple GRAMMY-nominee.
Gary Smulyan / baritone saxophone, High School
Baritone saxophonist Gary Smulyan is critically acclaimed as one of the major voices on the baritone saxophone today. As a teenager growing up on Long Island, Gary had the opportunity to perform with Lee Konitz, Chet Baker, and Jimmy Knepper.
In 1978 he was asked to join Woody Herman's Young Thundering Herd, which at that time included Joe Lovano, Marc Johnson and John Riley. He left Herman in 1980 and moved back to New York to join the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, led by Bob Brookmeyer. Mr. Smulyan has recorded and performed worldwide with Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Ray Charles, B.B. King, Tom Harrell. Cedar Walton, George Coleman, Joe Henderson, Joe Lovano, Tommy Flanagan, Chick Corea, Diana Ross, Clark Terry, Kenny Wheeler, Charles McPherson, James Moody and Slide Hampton, among others.
He has recorded five CDs for the CrissCross label: The Lure of Beauty; Saxophone Mosaic (voted one of the best 25 CDs of 1995 by WBGO); Homage (featuring Tommy Flanagan); Gary Smulyan with Strings (selected as one of the 10 best jazz CDs of 1997 by the Boston Globe); and Blue Suite with Brass. Gary's new release, The Real Deal, on Reservoir Records is currently available.
Mr. Smulyan currently performs with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, the Joe Lovano Nonet, the Dave Holland Octet and Big Band, The Three Baritone Saxophone Band, the George Coleman Octet, the Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band and the Tom Harrell Octet, as well as his own projects.
Over a span of 20-plus years, Gary has won the DownBeat and JazzTimes Critics and Readers Polls multiple times for Baritone Saxophonist of the Year in addition to winning the 2009, 2010 and 2012 Jazz Journalists Association Award for Baritone Saxophonist of the Year.
Mr. Smulyan is currently on faculty at William Paterson University and is a clinician and endorser for Vandoren Woodwind Products and Keilworth Saxophones.
George Stone / Sight Reading, College Big Bands
George Stone has been involved in music education for 24 years. He teaches Audio Technology, Music Theory and Composition at Cuesta College, in San Luis Obispo, California.
In 2005, he was given the Outstanding Academic Employee and Teacher of the Year Award. His 22-year career as a festival adjudicator and clinician has included the CMEA, CBDA, SCSBOA organizations and literally hundreds of jazz festivals throughout the country. George has been guest composer/conductor for all levels of jazz honor bands. As a composer he has been commissioned to write for numerous nationally recognized high school and college programs.
His compositions and arrangements are published worldwide. Prior to education, George worked as a musician and composer for live shows and television and has composed for CBS, NBC, HBO, The Tonight Show and Disney. He is an in-demand recording engineer, producer, trumpet player and pianist. His latest recording, entitled The Real Deal and newly published charts can be found at his website, georgestonemusic.com.
Kenny Washington / vocals
New Orleans native Kenny Washington developed a deep love for music at a very young age. Kenny grew up singing gospel in church, performing with the school band, and playing saxophone. After graduating from high school, Kenny continued his musical studies at Xavier University. While at Xavier, he studied various styles of music, ranging from traditional and contemporary jazz to classical, rhythm and blues, and pop.
Joining the honorary U.S. Navy Band in 1986, Kenny performed and toured nationally and internationally throughout the United States, Asia, Russia, and Australia. After nine years as a musician in the U.S. Navy, Kenny made his home in the San Francisco Bay Area. He began performing and recording in various jazz clubs with other well-known artists, and has appeared in Roy Nathanson's Off-Broadway production Fire at Keaton's Bar and Grill; and with Elvis Costello and Deborah Harry in London and New York. Kenny was the featured vocalist at San Francisco's world famous Mark Hopkins Intercontinental Hotel's “Top of the Mark” for eight years.
Kenny is the featured vocalist on saxophonist Michael O'Neill's recordings, The Long and the Short of It, and Still Dancin (Jazzmo Records). Kenny is also one of the featured vocalists with the a capella Slammin' All Body Band, with Keith Terry.
In February 2013, Kenny performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center as a featured soloist in Blood on the Fields, Wynton Marsalis’ Pulitzer Prize-winning jazz oratorio on slavery and freedom.
Considered a jazz vocalist virtuoso, Kenny encapsulates the classic styles of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan and infuses the colors of Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway. Kenny's free, playful approach, includes an awe-inspiring, four-octave range.
