Summer Jazz Camp
Every year since 1984, Monterey Jazz Festival hosts Monterey County students in an intensive, two-week Summer Jazz Camp, with professional musicians serving as Camp Clinicians.
Major funding for the 2013 Summer Jazz Camp comes from the Nancy Buck Ransom Foundation and Quest Foundation. Additional support is provided by the Monterey Peninsula Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, the Pebble Beach Company Foundation, and generous individuals.
2013 MONTEREY JAZZ FESTIVAL SUMMER JAZZ CAMP INFORMATION
More information about the 2013 Summer Jazz Camp will be available in spring 2013.
The Monterey Jazz Festival Summer Jazz Camp is an intensive immersion day program* for young jazz students to learn and develop music skills and knowledge, with classes including big bands, small ensembles, vocal performance, instrumental master classes, and daily workshops on different music subjects. The camp also includes special sessions for students to attend combo rehearsals and theory classes. The students range in age from 12 to 18 and will earn one college unit upon completion of the camp.
Teaching at the Summer Jazz Camp will be the 2013 Monterey Jazz Festival Artist-In Residence, Joe Lovano.
In addition to Mr. Lovano, the camp's roster of instructors features many of the finest jazz educators in the country. Past faculty include saxophonists Paul Contos, Paul Lucckesi and Virginia Mayhew; trumpeters Peck Allmond and Michael Galisatus; trombonist Robynn Amy, drummer Vince Lateano, bassist Scott Steed, guitarist Bruce Forman, pianists Milton Fletcher and Eddie Mendenhall; and renowned vocalists Julia Dollison and Kerry Marsh. Committed to training young instructors in the art of teaching, the camp also invites talented alumni of the Festival's Jazz Ed Programs to mentor younger students. In 2012, the Summer Jazz Camp welcomed back trombonist Mark Stotzer, drummer Jesus Vega, violinist Noah Freedman, and bassist Ryan Grech to its faculty.
