The Art of Jazz includes a year-by-year list of artists who have performed at the Festival from 1958-2007, as well as color reproductions of posters and program covers from each year, featuring designers Earl Newman, and many more. In five chapters, there are also decade-by-decade essays that look at the world and the Festival by New York Times bestselling authors, Keith and Kent Zimmerman, and a foreword written by famed film director and actor (and Monterey Jazz Festival board member), Clint Eastwood.
