SCHOOL COMPETITION
Information for Big Bands, Combos, and Vocal Jazz
Ensembles
• The
Next Generation Festival High School Competition
is open to superior rated Big Bands, Combos,
and Vocal Ensembles. The top Big Bands, Combo
and Vocal Ensemble will win cash awards and
be invited to perform at the 51st Annual
Monterey Jazz Festival, September 21, 2008.
• Audition tapes/CDs
are judged by faculty at Berklee College of Music.
• Twelve Big Bands,
six Combos, and eight Vocal Ensembles will be selected
as finalists.
• Finalist groups will
be notified by February 4, 2008.
• Individual scholarships
and trophies will be awarded to outstanding instrumentalists
and vocalists. All participating finalist ensembles receive
a plaque award. Participating music directors and students
each receive a free commemorative T-shirt or hat.
Application
Guidelines for High School Competition
• Ensembles
which have received a superior or first division
rating at a festival within the last 12 months
are eligible to enter.
• All members of ensembles
must be full time registered students in the schools they
represent.
• Submit a quality audition
cassette tape or CD recording of your current school year
ensemble along with copies of qualifying festival adjudication
sheets indicating superior or first division ratings. Group/school
names should not be identified on the label or in
MONTEREY JAZZ FESTIVAL PRESENTS the audition
recording.
• Recordings should be at least ten minutes
in length and include two charts. Names and timing of selections should appear
on the recording label. If at all possible, avoid recordings from concerts.
• Deadline for all entries
is January 25, 2008.
• Download, complete,
and mail in an application form along with qualifying adjudication

CONGLOMERATE BIG BAND COMPETITION
Information for Conglomerate Big Bands:

• The Next Generation Festival Conglomerate Division Competition is open to all Conglomerate Big Bands consisting of members who are enrolled in high school grades 9-12 or younger. The top Big Band will win a cash award and be invited to perform at the 51st annual Monterey Jazz Festival, September 19-21, 2008.
• Audition tapes/CD's are judged by faculty at Berklee College of Music.
• Six Conglomerate Big Bands will be selected as finalists.
• Finalist ensembles will be notified of their selection by February
4th, 2008.
• All participating finalist Conglomerate Division Big Bands will receive a plaque award. Participating band directors and students will receive a free commemorative NGF T-shirt or hat.

MIDDLE
SCHOOL DIVISION
Information for Big Bands

Non-Competitive Middle School category is
open to superior rated Big Bands.
• Audition tapes/CDs
are judged by faculty at Berklee College of Music.
• Six Middle School
Big Bands will be selected as finalists. Selected ensembles
will receive a performance opportunity at the Next Generation
Festival on Sunday, April 6th, 2008.
• Finalist groups will
be notified by February 4, 2008.
• All participating
finalist ensembles receive a plaque award. Participating
band directors and students each receive a free commemorative
T-shirt or hat.

• Ensembles

COMPOSITION

for Composers

• The
Big Band Composition Competition is open
to high school student composers.
• Compositions are judged by college-level music faculty.
• The winning
composer will receive a cash award, and the winning
composition will be performed by the Next Generation
Jazz Orchestra at the 51st Annual Monterey Jazz
Festival, September 21, 2008.
Application
Guidelines for Composers
• Open
only to students currently enrolled in high
school.
• Compositions must
be an original chart, not an arrangement, and written for
standard big band instrumentation. The selection should
not exceed 10 minutes in length.
• Composers should
submit three copies of a full score. Composers names
should not be written on the score.
• Deadline
for all entries is March 3, 2008.

NEXT
GENERATION JAZZ ORCHESTRA
Information for Chair Auditions (now
includes vocal soloist)

• All
student musicians entering or enrolled in
high school are eligible.
• Individuals are invited
to compete for a chair with the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra
either through videotape or live auditions at the Next
Generation Festival on Sunday, April 6th, 2008 ,
from 9:00am to Noon. Criteria for videotape and live auditions
will be the same and available online.
• In addition
to performing at the Monterey Jazz Festival in September,
members of the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra will
participate in an international performance tour
in Summer 2008.
• The names
of students selected will be posted on the MJF
website by by April 15th, 2008.
• Videotaped
auditions are due by March 3, 2008.
