Colburn Jazz Workshop Thursday Night Band

Winner of the Conglomerate High School Combo Division at the 2018 Next Generation Jazz Festival

The Thursday Night Band is a part of the award-winning Colburn Jazz Workshop at the Colburn School’s Community School of Performing Arts. The Colburn Jazz Workshop offers eight bands for middle and high school jazz students, including the Thursday Night Band, Monday Night Band, and Colburn Jazz Workshop Big Band. These three groups have amassed a number of honors, including more than 40 DownBeat Magazine Student Music Awards since 2012, many appearances as finalists at the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival, and many competition and performance honors for individual group members. Colburn Jazz Workshop students have regularly achieved membership in the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, including five members this year.

The purpose of the groups is to teach students how to develop musical skill and good work habits, and to discover and develop their creative voices in improvisation and composition. We are guided by admiration and affection for the wonderful musical legacy of our great jazz artists.

Past members of the workshop include drummer Jonathan Pinson, bassist/vocalist Katie Thiroux, pianist/composer Philip Golub, pianist/composer Isaac Wilson, guitarist Lucas del Calvo, saxophonist Jacob Scesney, and bassist Mike Gurrola, who are now emerging into their own professional careers.
