The Music of John Shifflett
“With a tone that's lithe and lustrous, Kristen Strom embodies her musical philosophy in every note she plays.”
—Andy Gilbert, San Jose Mercury News
Saxophonist Kristen Strom has been a mainstay on the Bay Area music scene for nearly two decades, acclaimed for beautifully rendered melodies, exceptional tonality, and accomplished musicianship. Strom has played alongside many well-known artists, including Manhattan Transfer, Gladys Knight, Natalie Cole, Roberta Flack, Johnny Mathis, Jimmy Heath, Steve Turre, Pamela Rose, and Jon Faddis.
In addition to her solo albums, Intention and Sojourn, she has recorded more than 40 CDs with various jazz and pop artists, including the international jazz group Crossing Borders, John Worley and Worlview, Pamela Rose, Ed Johnson and Novo Tempo, Wally Schnalle, Tammy L. Hall, the Jim Norton Collective, and poet Paul Zarzyski. Strom’s touring schedule has included performances across the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia.
San Jose Mercury News says of her album, Sojourn: “It floats, swings, and touches on samba, and each track has a gem-like solo by the leader.”
"Strom demonstrates again that she's among the finest contemporary sax players. Her stylings are rich in subtleties and nuance. “ —Paul Freeman, Palo Alto Daily News Entertainment Writer
Kristen is on the faculty of Santa Clara University, West Valley College and the Stanford Jazz Workshop. She is an endorsing artist and clinician for Selmer saxophones.
For this performance, Kristen will be presenting music from her new album, Moving Day – The Music of John Shifflett.
John Shifflett (1955-2017) was a beloved bassist, and well-known as THE sideman for many of the Bay Area’s foremost ensembles, with many performances at the Monterey Jazz Festival. What is not as well-known is that he also composed many compelling and unique pieces of music.
Kristen Strom played with John in her own quartet (with guitarist Scott Sorkin and drummer Jason Lewis) and countless other projects for more than 25 years. For this tribute to John, Kristen has arranged a collection of his compositions and has brought together some of the Bay Area’s best musicians to record and perform his music. They also happen to be some of John’s dearest friends and musical cohorts. The album is Moving Day – The Music of John Shifflett.
