Q: WHAT HAPPENS IF I’M SELECTED FOR THE BAND?
A: In 2018, under the direction of Education Director Paul Contos, the orchestra will tour The Next Generation Jazz Orchestra will tour Japan from July 25-August 6, 2018. A current passport is required for participation in the tour, with an expiration date at least six months after the date of return to the United States (February 6, 2019).The orchestra will also appear at the 61st Monterey Jazz Festival in a main stage performance with the 2018 Artists-In-Residence, Tia Fuller and Ingrid Jensen.
Members will be contacted by Monterey Jazz Festival with additional information and instructions.
They rehearse with the festival’s Artist-in-Residence, perform for area school groups and at our annual Gala on September 20 and take the main stage for a final performance. Recent Artists-in-Residence have included John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton and Gerald Clayton, Terri Lyne Carrington, Eric Harland, Joe Lovano, Ambrose Akinmusire, Dianne Reeves, Branford Marsalis, Regina Carter, Terence Blanchard, Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and Christian McBride.
Q: WHO ARE SOME OF NEXT GENERATION JAZZ ORCHESTRA ALUMNI?
A: Many NGJO musicians have gone on to professional careers in music. These include pianists Benny Green and Patrice Rushen, bassist Larry Grenadier, drummers Justin Brown, Marcus Gilmore and Chad Wackerman, saxophonists Joshua Redman, Donny McCaslin, Mark Turner, Eric Marienthal, Dave Koz, and Hailey Niswanger; trombonists Andy Martin, Luis Bonilla and Natalie Cressman, trumpeters Gilbert Castellanos, Ambrose Akinmusire, Stacy Rowles, Dominick Farinacci, and John Daversa; and big band leader Gordon Goodwin to name a few.
Q: HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
A: It costs $27 to audition online via Acceptd. In 2018, all auditions need to be submitted via Acceptd. Should you be selected, you will be responsible for travel to and from the tour location (late July) and to and from Monterey (mid-September). There is an additional expense associated with the tour (to be determined). We do offer substantial scholarships for those who qualify financially. In short, do NOT let the cost keep you from applying.
