Next Generation Jazz Orchestra Audition Information

Auditions be held for chairs in Monterey Jazz Festival’s Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, open to high school students anywhere, which is slated to tour at jazz venues and festivals domestically and abroad, as well as be a featured Sunday Arena performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival. Live auditions take place at the Next Generation Jazz Festival on Sunday, March 30, 2014.

Jimmy Lyons Scholarship Recipients

2013 - Justin Salisbury, piano

Justin Salisbury, age 18, hails from a small town called Clatskanie, Oregon in the lower Columbia River region. He began piano lessons in kindergarten.  Justin lives a little over an hour away from any jazz or musical enrichment; until he could drive his parents drove him everywhere. Justin is an in-demand musician in the Pacific Northwest who has played with many professional artists locally and from the national scene.

2013 Next Generation Jazz Orchestra Bios

Trombonist Sam Chess, 17, is a senior at University High School in Tucson, Arizona.  He additionally attends the Tucson Jazz Institute, where he plays lead trombone in the Ellington Band, their top ensemble. The Ellington Band’s many awards include first place in the Conglomerate Big Band Division at Monterey’s 2012 Next Generation Jazz Festival and the 2013 Essentially Ellington Competition, hosted by Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in New York City, where Sam won an Outstanding Trombone Soloist award.

The California High School All-Star Band was created in 1971 as a part of Monterey Jazz Festival's continuing commitment to jazz education.
