There’s no greater place to learn than on the bandstand. And there’s no bigger or more inclusive stage than the Next Generation Jazz Festival (NGJF). Each year we invite over 1300 of the nation’s best middle, high school and college musicians to play their hearts out all for the glory of performing at the Monterey Jazz Festival. Over three days, students:

  • Learn tips and techniques in workshops led by the pros
  • Get their minds blown by our star-studded faculty band
  • Receive thoughtful critique from world-renown artists
  • Jam for each other and the locals all over downtown Monterey
  • Share their music with jazz fans from 90+ countries via web stream
  • Earn scholarships, trophies, cash prizes and more
  • Audition for the prestigious Next Generation Jazz Orchestra

The NGJF is open to performing groups in the following categories:

  • Middle School Big Band
  • High School Big Band, Combo, and Vocal Jazz Ensemble
  • High School Big Band Composer
