"She can unleash maelstroms at the piano, throw an elbow and pound a fist, then make a U-turn and come back swinging." — NPR
Pianist Joanne Brackeen has been a pioneer for the last 50 years—she is the only female member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (1969-1972). In a long and illustrious career, she's had close associations with Joe Henderson, Stan Getz, Woody Shaw, and many others. Joanne returns to Monterey for the first time since 1980, and has just been named a 2018 NEA Jazz Master!

Pacific Jazz Café (Coffee House Gallery)
The Coffee House Gallery, one of MJF's most intimate venues, is now called the Pacific Jazz Café! Opened for music in 1997 at the Festival's 40th anniversary, the room has been renovated, expanded, and has a different stage direction in 2017. Plus, there will be Monterey Bay-inspired food by Aqua Terra, a full bar, and café tables. Even with the growth, the Pacific Jazz Café will continue to be the festival's place for music, conversations, and our annual jazz exhibit. It's the place to see—and hear—every note unfold.
