Come
celebrate the future of jazz at our 9th
Annual Next Generation Festival, April 5 – 7, 2013 in
downtown Monterey. Entries are now being accepted for our
Next Generation Jazz Festival Competition, with top groups
playing at the 56th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival.
Categories include Middle School, High School, and College
Big Bands; High School and College Vocal Ensembles; High
School Combos; Conglomerate Big Bands; and Open Combos, open
to any combination of College and/or Conglomerate High School
ensembles. High school composers can enter our Composition
Competition, with the winning piece to be premiered at the
Monterey Jazz Festival on September 22, 2013. All high school
student musicians and solo jazz vocalists are invited to
audition for our Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, performing
on a summer tour, and at the 56th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival.

VALDÉS QUINTET COMES TO THE SUNSET CENTER IN CARMEL,
NOVEMBER 8!
The
Sunset Center proudly presents the Chucho
Valdés Quintet on Thursday,
November 8, 2012 at 8:00 PM with tickets
starting at $39. Winner of five
GRAMMY® Awards and three Latin GRAMMY Awards,
Chucho Valdés has performed all over the
world in such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall,
the Kennedy Center and the Hollywood Bowl, and
has shared the stage with such musical luminaries
as Herbie Hancock, Billy Taylor, Chick Corea, Gonzalo
Rubalcaba, Branford and Wynton Marsalis, Carlos
Santana, Grover Washington Jr., Dizzy Gillespie,
Taj Mahal, and Tito Puente to name but a few, all
while paving a new path for Cuban music. Over the
course of his remarkable career Valdés has
been hailed as “the dean of Latin jazz” and “one
of the world’s great virtuosic pianists.” Come

VILLAGE, NEVADA, DECEMBER 1!

Reception and Music Performance by pianist Leon Bates,
hosted and sponsored on behalf of Monterey
Jazz Festival Ambassadors Tracy and Jennifer
Smith, Saturday, December 1, 2012,
from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. in Incline Village, Nevada.
This event is part of Monterey Jazz Festival’s Regional
Communities Program, which helps foster greater
support for the art of jazz within and beyond the communities
we serve. Donations will be accepted to benefit
Monterey Jazz Festival’s Education Programs. Please

Born in Philadelphia, pianist
Leon Bates was an understudy of Irene Beck, and a
student of Natalie Hinderas at the Esther Boyer College
of Music at Temple University. An internationally-renowned
performer, Mr. Bates has appeared with the Philadelphia
Orchestra; the Cleveland, San Francisco, Atlanta,
Detroit, and Boston Symphonies; and the New York
and Los Angeles Philharmonic in United States; and
in Europe, he has performed with the Vienna and Basel
Symphonies; the Radio-Orchestra of Dublin, the Strasbourg
Philharmonic, Orchestra Sinfonica dell’Accademia
Nazionale di Santa Cecilia; the Czech National Symphony
Orchestra; Malmo Symphony of Sweden, and more.
Mr. Bates will also conduct
two educational classes on November 30 for the students
at the Lake Tahoe School and will speak and play
classical music pieces from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Lake Tahoe School’s
Speaker Series. Funded by the Parent Association and
organized collaboratively with the LTS Administration,
the LTS Speaker Series is a venue to expose parents
to a variety of relevant educational and parenting
topics. |
