Q: WHEN WILL I FIND OUT IF I’VE MADE THE BAND?
A: The roster of selected students will be posted on the MJF website by Friday, April 17, 2020.
Q: WHAT HAPPENS IF I’M SELECTED FOR THE BAND?
A: In 2020, the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra will meet in Monterey in September for a week-long intensive prior to the Monterey Jazz Festival. The orchestra will also appear at the 63rd Monterey Jazz Festival in a main stage performance with the 2020 Artist-in-Residence, Christian Sands. Members will be contacted by Monterey Jazz Festival with additional information and instructions.
They rehearse with the festival’s Artist-in-Residence, perform for area school groups and at our annual Gala on September 24, and take the main stage for a final performance. Recent Artists-in-Residence have included Allison Miller and Derrick Hodge; Tia Fuller and Ingrid Jensen; John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton and Gerald Clayton; Terri Lyne Carrington, Eric Harland, Joe Lovano, Ambrose Akinmusire, Dianne Reeves, Branford Marsalis, Regina Carter, Terence Blanchard, Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and Christian McBride.
Q: WHO ARE SOME OF NEXT GENERATION JAZZ ORCHESTRA ALUMNI?
A: Many NGJO musicians have gone on to professional careers in music. These include pianists Benny Green and Patrice Rushen, bassist Larry Grenadier, drummers Justin Brown, Marcus Gilmore and Chad Wackerman, saxophonists Joshua Redman, Donny McCaslin, Mark Turner, Eric Marienthal, Dave Koz, and Hailey Niswanger; trombonists Andy Martin, Luis Bonilla and Natalie Cressman, flutist Elena Ayodele Pinderhughes, trumpeters Gilbert Castellanos, Ambrose Akinmusire, Stacy Rowles, Dominick Farinacci, and John Daversa; and big band leader Gordon Goodwin to name a few.
Q: HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
A: It costs $27 to audition online via Acceptd. Should you be selected, you will be responsible for travel to and from Monterey (late-September). There is an additional expense associated with the tour (to be determined). We do offer scholarships for those who qualify financially. In short, do NOT let the cost keep you from applying.
