Go back in time! Kicking off Saturday in the Arena is the Monterey debut of Grammy-winning Huey Lewis and the News, paying tribute to the Legendary Stax label and the sound of Memphis with Soulsville!

This quadruple-bill of funk celebrates the diversity of sound and heritage of the celebrated Crescent City neighborhood, Treme. Featuring the most raucous bands serving as ambassadors of the New Orleans sound, Emcee Wendell Pierce (who plays trombonist Antoine Batiste in the HBO series) will take you on an unforgettable musical tour.

The visionary pianist Geri Allen last performed at Monterey in 2006 with Charles Lloyd. Now she’s back, debuting Monterey’s 2011 Commission piece, “The Dazzler.” With tap dancer Maurice Chestnut in the band, Jazziz said that Timeline has an “intense rhythmic edge and speculative spirit.” Expect the unexpected in this Arena-only concert!

Joshua Redman is no stranger to the stages of Monterey – he’s been performing on them since the mid-80s since he was a student! In 2011, Joshua brings his stellar new group, James Farm, featuring pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Matt Penman, and drummer Eric Harland, where “new ground covered by Redman and his cohorts casts a spell of its own.” (Los Angeles Times)

The 4-ticket Family Discount Package includes two Adult and two Youth (Ages 2 - 18) Grounds Stage Tickets to the 2011 Monterey Jazz Festival. Portuguese vocalist and guitarist Carmen Souza breaks explores “the connections between Latin, African and Arabic music, American jazz and the music of Cape Verde.” (All About Jazz) World soul music for the 21st century

JUAN-CARLOS FORMELL: JOHNNY'S DREAM CLUB

Inspired by the "Feeling" movement of 1940s Cuba, guitarist and vocalist Juan-Carlos Formell debuts his latest project, “bring[ing] the rumba and bolero forms up to contemporary speed without tarnishing their essence." (Village Voice)

Multi-cultural project with Israeli keyboardist with multi-platinum vocalist share the stage in their Monterey debut! Arie describes this East-Meets-West project as “the most authentic musical expression of my life thus far.”

Create an unforgettable Monterey experience by staying on the Fairgrounds in your own RV for the Jazz Festival Weekend, a substantial savings from staying at a hotel! Three or 4-night stays are available in a location behind the Arena – close to all the music, all the food, all the excitement! Spaces have electricity, water, and sewer available.
