The Art of Jazz: Monterey Jazz Festival / 50 Years
“…the greatest of all West Coast jazz festivals...gorgeous, full-page color reproductions of its poster and program art, with a short essay for each decade… Great stuff.” —Paul de Barros, Seattle Times
The Art of Jazz: Monterey Jazz Festival/50 Years tells the story of the Monterey Jazz Festival through its graphic imagery and photographic moments (including iconic historical shots of Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, Dave Brubeck, and more) taken by Jerry Stoll, Veryl Oakland, Ron Hudson, and others, including archival photographs from the Monterey County Herald.
The Art of Jazz includes a year-by-year list of artists who have performed at the Festival from 1958-2007, as well as color reproductions of posters and program covers from each year, featuring designers Earl Newman, and many more. In five chapters, there are also decade-by-decade essays that look at the world and the Festival by New York Times bestselling authors, Keith and Kent Zimmerman, and a foreword written by famed film director and actor (and Monterey Jazz Festival board member), Clint Eastwood.
